where the buffalo roam, where the deer and the antelope play

Hoooh, what a weekend! We were supposed to spend it in Baguio City but an unfortunate event led us instead to the police station in a remote town-"where the buffalo roam, where the deer and the antelope play". (or where the goats roam and the ducks and roosters play).

Seriously, the town hall was really that isolated. From the main highway, we have to traverse more than 2 kilometers of ricefields before reaching the police station. There were only about 3 or 4 police officers at that time but only one was left to run the station later in the afternoon.

I was seated before the investigating officer and was talking to him in local dialect. As he was asking the other party, I was looking at the Crime Statistics board while listening to the replies. The photo below divided my attention.

There were no drug-related cases for 10 months. Illegal gambling pertain to the usual Jueteng. And you thought that it's a safe neighborhood?!?! Well, look again!!!!

The No. 1 on the list based on number of reported cases is RAPE.
Yes readers, R-A-P-E!!!

There were 5 cases of rape committed in 10 months, which means 1 case every two months. For a sleepy remote town where one would expect that "buffalo roam, where the deer and the antelope play", that number is scary. Look again. No report yet for October!

Let's get this done, I told my relatives. Don't want to be part of that scary stat board, for October!

When I asked about it, the police officer told me that it's a "disease" in that town. Well, the officer is not from the place also. Majority of the victims were minors and the offenders were strangers or were the stepdads or uncles of the victims.

So sad. i just hope they'll find a way to solve this and restore peace in this sleepy town about 40 km south of Baguio.
