SV Vagabond Heart

It was February 2005 when the Hawkins family first sailed from Sydney to Southport, the first leg of Sailing Vessel (SV) Vagabond Heart second circumnavigation.  They returned to Sydney in 2009.  During those years, they have gone to, among many others, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Oman, Cyprus, Turkey, Greece, U.K., Italy, Spain, Morocco, Carribean, Panama, Galapagos, and French Polynesia.

When they left Sydney, Edward, Alice and Wil were 9, 6 and 5, respectively.

Upon their return, Edward was already a teenager.  Alice and Wil have aged also, of course.

While navigating, their mom Deb (a former emergency doctor) supervised their homeschooling in the morning.  Thereafter, the kids take on their functions as ship crew -- chiefmate, bottle washer, fisherman, etc.

The captain of the ship is Bill, a petroleum engineer turned management consultant.

What a life…  Know more about their sailing adventures here… (Consider my write-up as an unauthorized account of their life, and all photos were taken from their website.  Just click the link)

Upon their return to Sydney, they continued to live aboard for several months, easing the transition back to shore life.  Having done these at such young age, how can the kids top this adventure?  Hike to Mt. Everest may not be good enough.  A trip to the moon, maybe?

My trusted source says that the boat is now sold to a new owner.  The Hawkins family is hoping that the new owner will take over the baton just like they did, and that SV Vagabond Heart will again sail to sea.

xoxo
