old movies marathon part 1

Over the long weekend, I caught the movie of KC Concepcion and Richard Gutierrez on TV “For the First Time” halfway through and for me, it should have been entitled “Awkward.”  Perhaps it was the script or the acting, but most scenes were awkward.  The “best” scene for me was when KC introduced herself to the entire family of Richard Gutierrez starting with “Hello po.  Ako po si Sophia Carmina Sandoval.  Mahal ko po ang anak nyo.” and it went on forever, ending with “Yun lang po.  I… thank you.”  I still cringe at the thought of that embarrassingly long speech.  The movie is eye candy though, as KC is very pretty.

And then I also saw this movie of Gabby Concepcion, titled “Asawa ko, huwag mong aagawin,” and I enjoyed it so much!  Amalia Fuentes, even if she was not the stereotypically sexy mom at this day and age, was very beautiful.  She was not thin at all, but she exuded this sex appeal (well to Eddie Gutierrez at least).  It was so funny that the characters were smoking all over -- at the construction site, in the office, on the bed.  There was also this scene which could be censored if shown now, as Amalia Fuentes and Eddie Gutierrez were not wearing seatbelts while riding the car.  And the classic part was when Gabby surprised Vilma Santos, with her favorite pizza, and it went something like, “Surprise! Ang favorite pizza mo, with…. Mushroom!”  Wahahaha!  It was so cute.  I want to catch it again as I was not able to finish it.

long weekend and Boracay

It's over. Days just went by in a flash. First day of the long weekend was wet- most of Manila streets are flooded. We were planning to go somewhere but the weather and BH's health (kawawa naman!) didn't permit. DS and I ended up doing his homework.

It was only yesterday that we got to enjoy the long holiday.Pahabol pero it's a blast. Swimming (no, not in Boracay) the whole day, boodle fight (for the second time) at lunch and singing galore with a little social drink in the evening. My in-laws concocted this delicious drink - Boracay Rum (Cappuccino Flavor) and Milo. The drink tasted like Bailey's and gives only a slight kick. Swabe lang! I wanna share the concoction:

Image from Tanduay.com.ph

3 bottles Boracay Rum (Cappuccino flavor)
600g pack Milo (or 2 liters Chocolait)
1/2 kilo sugar
1 small pack powdered milk
lots of ice
1 1/2  liters H2O

Pour the rum into a water jug or any large container and mix the Milo/ Chocolait, sugar, milk and H20. Mix and stir well (like when stirring "samalamig"). Pour the crushed ice...Enjoy!!!

I am not yet tuned to work-mode, maybe in a few minutes. I browsed through the 2011 calendar on my desk and looked for the next long weekend. Long wait ....if Pres. Pnoy will declare October 31st (a Monday) a special holiday. That's gonna be 60 days from today. UGH!!!

Weird Proteus

I thought weird na to:
- wearing high-heeled shoe on your left foot and slippers on the other?
 - wearing eyeglasses upside down
 - using feminine wash as shampoo and have a bouncy shiny hair
 - clipping your hair with paper clip
 - eating mais from one plate and drinking milk with crushed ice
 - calling your boss, “bok” or ‘pare”
 - taking a picture of yourself using your cellphone camera just to check if your pimple got bigger.
  -  eating rice with spaghetti or pancit as ulam?

Look below.
Image from http://www.weirdthings.org.uk/

Now that’s weird. I was looking for something bizarre for this blog when I saw this.
Diba parang he has two faces.
It’s actually a condition or a disease called “Proteus Syndrome”. It “causes skin overgrowth and atypical bone development, often accompanied by tumors over half the body” (Wikipedia).

Proteus is a Greek God who can transform himself into different shapes.
Thus, "protean"  is someone flexible or versatile.

X

X, clipping your hair with paper clip while at the office is no longer considered weird in this generation. . . it only means : i am serious at work and busy, go away unless you have food or something to give. . . wehehe! what's weird is sprinkling avocado with splenda (instead of wala-pa-ring-tatalo-sa-alaska! -- condensed milk or gatas na malapot, as we call it).  baka kasi iba na naman ang sosi-term ni Y.  ha,ha! -- Z

AMDG

ad majorem dei gloriam (AMDG), latin for :  for the greater glory of God, the origin of which is attributed to the founder of the Jesuits, Saint Ignatius of Loyola.

ateneo law school, 75 years
 ad majorem dei gloriam

the ateneo, being one of the universities run by the Jesuits in the Philippines.

with the ateneo and it's latin motto currently in circulation via the 100 peso bill, hopefully, this will remind every alumni, more especially the ateneo law school kind, to act (and to serve) ADMG. . . for the greater glory of God poh!  problem is, yung mga dapat i-remind, di yata gumagamit ng 100 peso bill. . . si FG kaya and "fatty-er son" tumataban  humahawak pa ng P100?! come to think of it, the entire former first family (uy, FFF!), mga "corn-bred" pala - - all of them studied and took up degrees at the ateneo (although 1 failed to complete his jd), which campus used to be popular for sweet japanese corn.  so, mga dugong bughaw na medyo ibang color na ang budhi, if AMDG is too hard to remember, yung kay pnoy na lang poh (na dugong bughaw din) ang sundin : matuwid na daan, bawal ang wangwang!

thanks to  metrobank's atm machine that dispensed these bills today, nagka-blog topic ako bigla!

Z

tumataban means humahawak, Y thought i mis-spelled or something.  when i explained what it means, she googled and emailed to prove me wrong.  just wait and i will find the authority for this. . . hehe!

fab! a new look to the Speedy

The title does not refer to Speedy Gonzales, but to the bag, ok? Hahaha.
A friend of mine (she-who-could-not-be-named-lest-XYZ-will-be-busted) just told me over the phone that she bought a Speedy with shoulder strap.  I remember I saw the Baghag's post on that, but I could not appreciate it so much because the Speedy is being carried while riding a bike.

Notice how the bottom of the Speedy retained its structure…  But we know for sure that for this bag to retain this shape, you must fill it up or you must place something inside at the bottom to support the contents (like a cardboard or a pashmina, depending on how sosy you are, Hahaha!).  In this photo, it is probably just empty.

So I really wondered how it would look in real life.  Then I saw this shot of Emily Browning

http://celebags.blogspot.com/search/label/Louis%20Vuitton

There you have it, a more realistic action shot.  I must say, I like the look, and I would want to buy one, NOW!   #dreamon

Or maybe later tonight  #inmydreams   LOL

Y

i like also. . . but more so the bike in the 2nd pic. . .he,he... my take on this speedy breed:  if with long strap, go for the monogram; if the classic speedy, go for damier.  i wish.  - Z

fab! nail buffing 101

Now that we are on the topic of nails (toenails and fingernails, and not the pako type, hehehe) may I just share what I look for in a nail salon.  For me, a good nail salon must not only give you a decent nail cleaning job, but must also be one that does “nail buffing” and can do it the proper way.  I believe that the need for buffing should not be underestimated.  Nail buffing makes the surface of the nail more consistent and shiny and, in the long term, stronger.  In my experience, the nail polish does not go off easily when my nails are properly buffed.

The technique is found in Wikipedia, and I quote:
  • The Emery board nail file should not be used to buff the surface of the nails. They are meant only to shape them from the side.
  • The medium grit can be used to erase ridges and surface irregularities. This can be done before applying nail polish or as a first step before finer buffing.
  • The fine-grained buff is used to smooth the nail to a matte surface.
  • The finest finishing grit gives the nails a glossy shine.
I first got introduced to nail buffing in the mid 90’s.  I distinctly remember my Body Shop nail buffer, where the medium grit is white, the fine grained buff is baby blue and the finest finishing grit is baby pink.

What they now sell in Body Shop is this. I am very sure the printed surface is the finishing grit.

I also notice that most next-door express-nail-salons with nice chairs and individual lamps, and which are often built beside or near waxing salons, do not include nail buffing in their basic packages (P250-P450 for both hands and feet).  I am not sure if they do that in the more expensive packages, but that is a turn-off for me because nail buffing should be an integral part of the manicure-pedicure process.  In one salon, I tried their P700 package, but without getting nail buffing.  I felt that was highway robbery.

And even in some very few nail salons that do offer nail buffing, I had several turn-off-I-am-not-coming-back experience.  In one salon, after the cleaning process, they buffed the nail surface with one type of buffer which leaves the nail with a matte surface.  I tell you, even if they applied the Orly nail polish on my nails, the following day, the nail polish was chipping already.

In another nail salon, they have the correct nail buffer.  However, they took time in performing the medium gritting and fine-grained buffing for each nail, then just did the finest finishing grit haphazardly.  I guess this is one classic case of not understanding the technique.

There is only one neighborhood nail salon in BF Paranaque which I highly trust and could vouch as they do really excellent service (with nail buffing, of course) for such a low price of around P190 for the feet, inclusive of cleaning, signature scrubbing and massage and nail polish using Orly.  (I say neighborhood because it is very near our house.)  And trust me, I am not at all related to the owner or owners, and I do not even know them / him / her.  The downside is that they just have 1 or 2 manicurista at one shift, and so you really have to make an appointment or call prior.  Also, although they do not charge you additional for the use of imported nail polish, they have very limited shades.  But still the skill is very rare at least in this part of the Metro.

sa kuko ng "alila"

even if I am not gifted with candlestick-shaped fingers, I love nail polish. It all started  in high school when I saw my aunt wearing fuchsia. I am not particular about the brand as I grew up trying on  “Cutex”(that my college buddies mistook for cotton buds), “Caronia” which was made popular by a commercial with dancing girls flashing their nails and of course “Bobbie” (Chic and Colortrends). Now that I am “older” and had grown “wiser” ( NOTE: turn “w” upside down and you’ll get “miser”), I look for color rather than name. Z gave me few weeks ago (tnx), an expensive brand (“Opi”) which I used right away. Okay, good brand has its advantage coz color application lasts longer (NOTE AGAIN:  I used tons of acetone to remove the color from my nails! Hahaha!) .

Whenever I go to Watsons or SM or Robinsons, I head to the nail care products first. My color choices depend on what mood I have or want to project. I have been looking for ash gray and dark gray and the "GO POWquiao" shade(“Mwah!” line)  from Bobbie.

Just wanna share snapshots of my colorful nails for the past 2 weeks.
Enjoy viewing !!! (these were from my mobile phone cam, kaya not so good ang resolution).

Orange Float

Dainty Pink

Witchy Gold

So pretty, eh! Except for the orange float, I made up the names for the last two shades.

X

I asked X, what's with the title?  She said it was culled from the title of the movie "Sa Kuko ng Agila," which I later on learned was a 1989 movie (hmm, were you of age already at that time, X? me, definitely not.. bwahaha!).  It was about Olongapo City during the time of the U.S. Bases, and which starred Pres. Joseph Estrada, ex-Senator Nikki Coseteng, Tommy Abuel (who was in almost all 1980's Pinoy movie) and the late Paquito Diaz.

So, the next question is, what is "Sa Kuko ng Agila" in English.  Hmm, nail of the eagle?   No, wrong.  It is Eagle's Talons.  #trivia.

Y

X,  i am confused. . . i just checked and i have orly.  how come yours is opi?  (although i always confuse these 2 brands but yours and mine are supposed to be the same brand . . . hmmm....&%$#!!  confused!)

anyway,  you might want to try essie's fab collection!

and your elusive dark gray, you might find it under "greige" collection of imported brands. . . check this out:  http://www.bargainist.com/deals/2010/07/next-best-is-better-greige-nail-polish/#b

coffee(ish)

I enjoyed my weekend a lot, and so I felt sleepy pretty much throughout the day.  And that is even after I sipped a cup mugful of instant coffee.  So I wondered why?  Am I immuned to caffeine?  (Panic) This can't be happening, because I even get palpitations generally after drinking coffee, so why oh why?  (think, investigate!)

My curiousity then led me to check my trash bin to salvage the wrapper, and lo and behold, I realized it was not predominantly coffee, but more of sugar with cream and instant coffee.  (isn't that redundant, instant coffee with instant coffee?) Nyee!  Wow mali!

And how come there's even aspartame? Na-insecure sa sweetness so kulang pa daw? Hmmm...

Y

Y, go back to starbucks via if you're going instant! . . . never those 3-in-1,  2-in-1,  brown coffee thing . . . too sweet!  it's like sugar with coffee flavor!  or,  since you volunteered to bring a coffee maker before, you might be feeling generous for a coffee bean & tea leaf machine

http://www.cbtl.com.ph/?to=Philippines

the available capsules for coffee are:

san ka pa?!  if they have nespresso, we can definitely settle for this! hahaha . . . wag lang local coffee sachet. . . notwithstanding the variety of  local instant coffee, i have yet to discover one that is really coffee than just sugar. . . maybe figaro should come up with an instant coffee of their own also . . .

Ilocano 101 ("Cracked" Course)

Speaking Ilocano is as easy as abc, but understanding Ilocano is a challenge.
Ilocano is my third language (Tagalog and English being the 1st and 2nd respectively).

You think “didiay bangir, diak maawatan” is already funny? Wala pa yan if you read Bannawag (the Ilocano version of Liwayway). I grew up loving the magazine and usually hide the weekly copy under my pillow so that I’m the first to read, including Ilocano horoscope!

My folks are pure Ilocanos. Not the kuripot species.

My Pa (who speak and write the dialect very well) use “never-heard before” terms.
He grew up with the traditional “prayles” of Ilocos Sur with mixed local clergy.

Examples of his unforgettable lines:

  • Pag nakakita ng person na sour-graping he’ll call him – “kasla agis-isem nga bennek”. This means “parang nakangiting snail”. Ngumingiti ba ang snail?
  • Pag nakakita sa mga weddings or maski san event ng may maputing make-up eto comment nya – “Hala! Kasla wawak”. Meaning: mukhang mumu! Sobrang kapal kasi ng Lyna sa mukha!
  • “Alintaweng”- insane
  • “sarusar”- storage  place
  • “kasla nakuk-kokan nga bisukol”- I heard him say this once when a politician from our place scolded his “super alalay” in front of him. That alalay suddenly became kind to the people in our place. The term literally means “escargot”. Hahaha! Snail whose butt had been crushed.”
  • And if he can’t wake us up at 10am on weekends, he used to tell us “Dayta la ak-kob ti mata yo ti sir-siripen yon”. Meaning: “Yun na lang talukap ng mata nyo ang laging sinisilip nyo”

Basic terms when in the Ilocos Republic
  • Sagmamano – How much
  • Apay – Why
  • Saan- No
  • Wen- Yes
  • Papanan tayo- Where are we going? (remove the “ta” from the “tayo” meaning will be changed to "Where are you going")
  • Agawidakon- I’m going home.
  • Intayon- Let’s go
  • Napintas- pretty
  • Nagalas, naglaad- Ugly
  • Nabanglo- fragrant
  • Na-angdod, Nabangsit – smelly
  • Gayyem- friend
  • Kabusor- enemy
  • Napudaw- whiteee!!!
  • Nagpugot, nagngisit- Tim-i!!!
  • Napardas- fast
  • Nabuntog- slow
  • Naimas- delicious
  • Agyamanak- Thank you
  • Duray ditam- No way!
So many more… Abangan!!!

amazing! isang litrong liwanag

around a month back, i was copied in an exchange of emails between X and Y and i recall seeing a picture of illac diaz and X mentioning about illac's bumbilya projects . . . i wasn't really interested about this new project of illac, as the last one i sort of knew was his "housing" project that looked like an igloo, which was kinda too unorthodox for me. . .besides, more than anything else, i think X and Y were not really discussing about illac's project but rather his age and/or looks...hahaha!  anyway, i was surfing the net today and illac's "isang litrong liwanag" caught my attention. . .amazing! ok, now illac is making sense to me. . .he was my classmate for 1 or 2 subjects in college and was even my seatmate for a while  . . .i must admit that while he was one of those staying at the popular "conyo bench" in school, he was quite down-to-earth. to me,  his ideas, were  beyond my level though. . . masyadong profound . . . parang ito, ibang level, kakaiba!  hello, pang-comedy lang ako no! hahaha :) seriously, ok naman pala...bow ako sa yo . . . dude, you're a man! este, you're the man!  mabuhay ka!  ¡vamos, señor diath! :)  ¡muy bien, muy bien!

yummy! pansit guisado with liempo

pansit guisado with liempo from lomi king,  lipa, batangas . . . do not underestimate the level of sarap . . .  the photos do not give justice on how delicious this pansit tastes --- sarap to the bones! . . . uhhh . . . errr . . . well, sometimes may konting bone yung liempo :) ha,ha!  their lomi is good too . . . not for "to go" though because it gets malabnaw when it's no longer piping hot . . . the best lomi i tasted in lipa was from 3 kids . . . according to almost all lipaenos i've had the chance to talk about lomi, the best talaga ang 3 kids  -- institusyon sa lipa. . . so there goes, after my lomi initiation last year, nagsara after 6 months! hello?!!!

fashion trend . . . for salads

the classic caesar salad we all got used to is served chopped and tossed...

gourmet-food-revolution.com

well, it's like the lbd {little black dress} which is and will always be classic.

but salad to be "classy" nowadays must look something like this when served...

....naturally bunched-leaves simply cut into half, drizzled with dressing, croutons and what-have-you...then served!

the avante garde of which is to grill it!
